MARRIAGE: Certificate obtained from the Birmingham Register Office, Jun 2001.John Henry is age 20yrs, bachelor, Tube Drawer, Florence Street, father Edward Goodby, Metal Roller. Mary Ann is age 20yrs, spinster, of Florence St, father George Gurney, Cycle Maker. Witnesses Thomas Vincent and Susannah Chatwin. Original signatures.

1891 CENSUS: Extracted as Goodley. 73 Essington St, Ladywood, Birmingham. Father Edward Goodby age 44 is a Metal Healer, Ann mother age 45, Miller (Amelia) daughter age 18 a Pin Sticker, John son age 12 errand boy, Edward son age 11, and Annie daughter age 8.

MILITARYRECORD: 1916-1919 Sergeant 35338 Royal Army Medical Corps.

CHILDREN: From information received from Eric and Ken Goodby, there are a number of children; Amelia, Arthur, May, James, Albert and Jack, but I have not much information. Births information pending research. More information from Edna Mole via letter in 2006. More info from Keith Goodby.

1939 CENSUS: 378 Farm St, Hockley, Birmingham. John H. Goodby male married age 53, born 25 Nov 1877, Occupation not noted. Mary A. Goodby female married age 53 b. 11 May 1878 Unpaid Domestic Duties.

DEATH: 378 Farm Street, Hockley. Died as a result of enemy action on Sunday 27 October 1940, Age 63. Commemorated in the County Borough of Birmingham Section of the Civilian War Dead Register. He is also listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). John Henry Goodby had the habit during air raids during WWII of standing on the back step of his house, and shaking his fist at enemy bombers while cursing the kaiser. Unfortunately, the house took a direct hit (or a near miss) which killed him. There is a Memorial in the Bullring in Birmingham and his name is on it and I took a photo Sep 2009.

NOTE: Anthony D'Arcy contacted me via GenesReunited in 2004 regarding his gt grandfather John Henry Goodby. He lives in Finland and I have emailed him. tony.darcy@kolumbus.fi I have found some more information. Anthony's parents were Elizabeth Goodby and John J. D'Arcy married 1956 Jun qtr Birmingham 9c 1141. Anthony E. D'Arcy was born 1962 Jun qtr Birmingham 9c 415, mother's maiden name Goodby.

NOTE: John W. Goodby in York, said that John Henry Goodby was a Rabbi in Bath Row, Birmingham. He said that his grandmother was Irish and Catholic, and George Edward, their son, would have been Jewish. Both are buried in Church of England graves in Coleshill.
